Time to trim the loose ends of the tailstring debate.

To the Editor:We were pleased to read the Society of Family Planning's clinical guideline, "Use of the Mirena? LNG-IUS and ParaGard? CuT380A intrauterine devices in nullipa-rous women" [1].We write to highlight one controversial section in the guideline. The authors state: "The Dalkon Shield, an IUD that is no longer available, increased users' risk of pelvic inflammatory disease (PID) by a wicking effect of its multifilament string that allowed microbes to ascend into the upper genital tract from the vagina." We disagree with the notions that the multi-filament string was an indisputable cause of PID and that the Dalkon Shield was responsible for increased PID rates.
