About half a century ago, this remarkable statement by A. J. Birch in 1963 was only a vision. Nowadays, however, Birch,[1] who died in 1995, would be most delighted to see how chemical synthesis is being complemented by tools that allow biosynthetic pathways to be manipulated to generate ana- logues of drugable natural products.
