Electrochemical devices hold promise as a sustainable route for energy conversion to meet the requirements of future generations. Their development is contingent upon improvements to the functionality of their electrodes. The catalytic performance of these materials is controlled by the atomic and electronic structure of their active sites. Therefore, the design of the appropriate active site is crucial'to obtain high catalytic activity, especially where multi-functionality is needed. However, the control of a given surface on an atom-by-atom basis is particularly challenging.
