Among the lanthanides, La-Lu, Ce compounds have played a unique and important role in organic synthesis, inorganic chemistry, and materials science because of their distinct accessible tetravalent oxidation state. As a result, there is keen interest in expanding Ce redox chemistry. Ce~(IV) compounds are best known as oxidants, while reductions with Ce~(III) are widely viewed as counterintuitive. Ideally, Ce~(III) complexes may serve as economical complements to the established Sm~(II) reduction systems. In order to apply Ce~(III) as a reductant, controlled redox behavior, which allows for prediction of the products, must be established.'1" Furthermore, the results of these studies may enable the oxidative functionalization of Ce~(III) complexes, which has proven challenging.
