Cost to make pennies, nickels above face value

Production costs for U.S. pennies and nickels remained above face value for the 10th year in a row in fiscal 2015, despite the fact that unit costs actually decreased, according to the U.S. Mint.The unit cost for pennies was 1.43 cents in fiscal 2015, ended Sept. 30, down 13.9 percent from 1.66 cents in fiscal 2014, the agency said in its annual report. The unit cost for nickels was 7.44 cents, down 8 percent from 8.09 cents in the same comparison.
