Nickel pig iron production drives ore imports higher

China's nickel ore imports totaled 5.64 million tonnes in the first quarter, a 52.2-percent jump from the same period last year as the high price of refined nickel encouraged more nickel pig iron production. Imports of refined nickel in the quarter were only 2.9 percent higher at 48,975 tonnes, according to Chinese Customs data.
