NEARLY 100 years of continuous use had taken its toll on Melbourne's Flinders Street Station, so the Victorian Government allocated 13 million dollars to strengthen the deck of the station concourse. To help the old concourse cope with increased loads, Sydney-based contractor Eptec applied BASF Construction Chemicals' MBrace unidirectional carbon fibre sheets to the underside of the concourse structure. The project offered some additional challenges when compared to most projects, including work scheduling amidst an operating railway station, and more than 100 years of built-up dirt and grime on the concrete surface.
