We searched Pubmed for the following terms and combination of terms: "postabortal infection", "elective abortion infection", "pelvic infection elective abortion", "pelvic inflammatory disease induced abortion", "pelvic inflammatory disease elective abortion", "endometritis elective abortion", "endometritis induced abortion", "treatment infection elective abortion", "treatment endometritis abortion". We also used relevant references from the reviewed studies and from the textbook Management of Unintended and Abnormal Pregnancy [1] and included review articles regarding pelvic inflammatory disease (PID). We eliminated the following from the review: articles on prophylaxis or screening, articles before 1970, studies of infection after spontaneous abortion, case reports and studies that included patients who presented after illegal or illicit abortions.
