The European Commission has opened an in-depth investigation to assess whether the proposed acquisition of Syngenta by ChemChina is in line with the EU Merger Regulation, which monitors the effect of business deals on market shares. The Commission will assess whether the deal may reduce competition in crop protection products and the supply of certain input chemicals. In September, ChemChina notified the Commission of its plans to acquire Syngenta. The Commission set a provisional deadline of October 28th to decide if the proposed concentration of businesses could fall within the scope of the EU Merger Regulation. The companies say that they intend to continue constructive discussions with the EU authorities in order to conclude the review as early as possible.
