A new report from the US National Academies of Science (NAS) says that the emerging science of gene drives has great promise to help address an array of public health and environmental challenges. But it cautions that far too many questions remain for organisms modified by the technology to be released into the environment. The 202-page report is one of the first to try and tackle the scientific, ethical, legal and social questions about gene drives, a powerful new tool that could allow scientists to rapidly alter and potentially eradicate wild animal and plant species.
