EU proposes glyphosate renewal

The European Commission has proposed to renew the EU approval for the herbicide, glyphosate. Its proposal will be presented for a vote by member-state representatives in the EU Standing Committee on Plants, Animals, Food and Feed in March. The Commission’s draft decision follows controversy over the active ingredient’s evaluation and renewal, after the UN WHO’s International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) classified the herbicide as probably carcinogenic. However, the Commission’s approval decision, as for all agrochemical ais, is based on the EU evaluation and peer review carried out by the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA). In its peer review, the EFSA disagreed with the IARC’s classification and concluded that glyphosate was unlikely to be carcinogenic.
