Major crops power agchem growth in Brazil

The soybean, maize, cotton and sugar cane sectors are driving growing demand for pesticides in Brazil, the business newspaper, Diario de Comercio e Industria, reports. It cites the agrochemical industry trade association, the Sindiveg, adding that soybean products accounted for the majority (51.3%) of last year's $11,454 million of sales {Agrow No 691, p 17). The Sindiveg anticipates 6-9% growth in this year's pesticide market {Agrow ibid). Almost 60% of sales occur between August and November, in time for the summer planting season. In the first half of the year, the market is calmer as risk from pests is lower in the winter.
