1,3-D fails in second bid for EU approval

The European Commission is now free to go ahead with its proposal to decline the re-registration of the nematicide, 1,3-dichloropropene (1,3-D), following the failure of EU Ministers to agree on the issue. The Ministers could not reach the qualified majority vote required to reject or accept the Commission's proposal at their meeting at the end of November. They had been asked to decide after a similar divided outcome by the EU regulatory committee [Agrow No 599, p 8). Dow AgroSciences and Kanesho Soil Treatment had re-applied for EU approval after the EU decided in 2006 not to re-register the active ingredient.
