New EU Commission in place

The new European Commission is in place, following its approval by the European Parliament this month. It includes the new Commissioner for health and consumer policy, John Dalli. He is in charge of a much-expanded Health and Consumers Directorate General (DG), DG SANCO, which will cover a wide range of EU legislative responsibilities for genetically modified crops and pesticides (Agrow No 581, p 9). The Commission's term will run until October 31st 2014.
