Necrotic isolates of Bean common mosaic virus (BCMV) were identified in leaf samples with virus-like symptoms, collected from snap beans grown in the south region in Bulgaria. The samples were analyzed by ELISA and RT-PCR. The results from both analyseswere positive for the presence of BCMV. Further biological characterization on bean differential varieties for BCMV/BCMNV pathotypes (according to Drijfhout's range) revealed that some of the isolates, identified as BCMV, caused temperature-independent systemic necrosis and death on differentials with lbcl and Ibcl2 genotypes. The observed phenotype was distinctive for Bean common mosaic necrotic virus (BCMNV) pathotypes. ELISA and RT-PCR analysis with temperature-independent necrotic isolates were negative for BCMNV. Similar inconsistencies with the standard range of pathotypes were observed by other authors. Reconsideration of the standard range of BCMV pathotypes needs to be taken into account.
