Rootstock Screening for Tolerance to Low Temperature, Weak Light and Salt Stress in Cucumber

To screen rootstocks for cucumber grafting with tolerance to low temperature, weak light, and salt stress, seedlings of 15 cultivars were treated in a growth chamber (5°C and 100 pmolm 2s"' PAR) or in 100 mmol L 1 of NaCl solution. The growth and physiological indicators were investigated, and tolerance was evaluated by establishing a subordinative function value and by using principal component and regression analyses. The results of cluster analysis showed that 'Yunnan figleaf gourd' and 'Tielizhen' had the highest tolerance to low temperature and weak light stress, followed by 'Shintosa', 'Japan figleaf gourd' and 'Qingyan rootstock NO. 1'; 'Improved Shintosa NO. 1', 'Armor', 'Just', 'Terutaro' and 'Able' were rootstocks with moderate tolerance;'Huofenghuang', 'Sherpa' and 'Grip' were sensitive; 'Tokiwa power-Z' and 'Glitter' were most sensitive. For the tolerance to salt stress, 'Yunan figleaf gourd', 'Japan figleaf gourd', 'Tielizhen', 'Shintosa' and 'Qingyan rootstock NO. 1' were higher tolerant, followed by 'Armor' and 'Improved Shintosa NO.l'; 'Just', Terutaro', 'Able', 'Tokiwa power-Z', 'Grip' and 'Glitter' were sensitive; 'Huofenghuang' and 'Sherpa' were more sensitive.
