'Borneo Prima', mandarin cultivar for low and wet area of Kalimantan, Indonesia.

In Indonesia, most of mandarin (Citrus reticulate Blanco) cultivars with orange-colour rind are grown on the high land areas of 700-1200 m above sea level. Growing trees under this altitude induces the fruit rind color to change to greenish yellow with more pale flesh. Evaluation of five selected trees had been conducted in order to choose the best one based on the horticultural performance. The selected mother tree were free from the Huang Long Bin pathogen, Citrus tristeza virus, and other viruses by shoot tip grafting, followed by indexing. Now, three years after the viruses, tree planting materials were produced. More than 200,000 trees or 400 ha have been planted by citrus growers in the regency of Nunukan, Berau and Kutai Timur in East Kalimantan, Borneo where this mandarin cultivar was found. 'Borneo Prima', the promising mandarin cultivar will become a mascot of East Kalimantan. It has round-shaped fruit, yellow to orange colour rind, easy peeling and good balance between sweet and sour taste. It is well adapted to low and wet areas. The crop requirement, agro-ecological zones and its relation with other cultivars of mandarin by DNA-test, are discussed in more detail in this paper.
