The effects of four rooting substrates (Oasis, vermiculite, peat/perlite and perlite) the on rooting potential and quality of live cuttings of E. canum accessions from northern Utah, southeastern Idaho, western Wyoming, and northern California, USA, were studied. Perlite resulted in a lower number of roots compared to the other substrates. A higher percentage of necrotic leaves was also observed in the cuttings grown in perlite. Natural crossing occurred between two cultivars of E. canum subsp. garrettii in the autumn of 2010. Seedlings of the cross were planted in a garden in Utah in 2011. A two-toned variation (a pink flared corolla and a red hypanthium) was discovered within the population. In the autumn of 2011, viable seeds were collected from five controlled crosses between E. canum subsp. garrettii and the various California forms of sect. Zauschneria.
