For many years lead-acid batteries have been utilized in uninterruptible power supply (UPS) duty and as of today their reign does not appear to be ending. This article explores (primarily) valve regulated lead acid (VRLA) batteries and strategies to increase their availability in this environment, but the techniques described are equally effective for larger vented lead acid (VLA) batteries also. VRLA batteries are particularly well understood and their capacity degradation over time in controlled conditions has been explored and well documented (1).
