Genetic diversity of germplasm resources of litchi and longan using SSR analysis.

Twenty-seven pairs of SSR primers developed from litchi were applied to detect the genetic diversity of 60 accessions of litchi and longan from Guangdong, Guangxi, Fujian, Hainan, Yunnan and Sichuan Provinces of China. These accessions included 47 cultivars or rare landraces of litchi, 1 longli, 2 artificial intergeneric hybrids (litchi x longan) and 10 longan cultivars. Cluster analysis indicated that the similarity coefficients ranged from 0.14 to 1.00. This implied that the accessions were highly genetically diverse. From the dendrogram, 60 accessions could be classified into three groups with a 0.59 similarity coefficient. The first group included the litchi accessions and 2 artificial intergeneric hybrids. The second group included the longan cultivars. The third group included 'longli', a tentative natural hybrid of the longan and litchi genus. This result confirmed traditional taxonomy. In addition, the classification for sub-groups under the first and second groups was consistent with their ripening season.
