The Passo Fundo region experiences adverse weather conditions. Moreover, birds often damage the crop during the maturation and harvesting of the fruit. In this situation, cultivation in a protected environment becomes an attractive technology. However, producing figs in this environment is expensive, primarily because the overall use of the protected area may be insufficient depending on the space used. In Brazil, relatively little research has been performed on the intercropping of fruit. The resulting lack of information makes it difficult for farmers to use this technology. This study was conducted to meet the need for additional information on intercropping. The purpose of the study was to evaluate the viability of intercropping the fig cultivar 'Roxo de Valinhos' with strawberries grown in substrate. To verify the growth and adaptation of the strawberry in this production system, an experiment was performed to estimate the phyllochron in five cultivars of strawberry. The strawberry cultivars were grown in white polyethylene bags filled with substrate and intercropped with fig trees. The phyllochron ( degrees C day leaf-1) was estimated by the inverse of the slope of the linear regression of the number of leaves in the main crown for the accumulated thermal time. The mean and standard deviation of the phyllochron of strawberry cultivars intercropped with fig trees varied from 149.35 degrees C leaf-1+or-31.29 in the 'Albion' cultivar to 86.34 degrees C leaf-1+or-34.74 in 'Ventana'. These results indicated that 'Albion' requires a greater accumulation of degree-days to produce a leaf than 'Ventana'.
