摘要

Banyuwangi regency located on the eastern part of East Java is one of the important mangosteen production centers in Indonesia with more than 1,104 tons of fruit production per year from 25,014 trees dispersed over 500 ha. Most of the trees were raised from seed; about 15-20% are young trees less than 10 years old and the remaining trees are 30-50 years old. The local varieties planted have a nice skin color, reddish brown to deep purple, each fruit consists of 5-6 segments with a white, sweet flesh. Growers sell their fruits at domestic markets such as Denpasar, Surabaya and Malang, and also on the export market, mainly to Taiwan. Growers never use pesticide or apply fertilizer to their old trees so that the yields merely come from organic agricultural practices. The constraints faced by the growers in this region are fruit number fluctuation and its low quality. Based on observation, less than 15% of the yields meet the export requirement. The local extension service formulated Standard Operating Procedures for better cultivation and communicated it to mangosteen growers in order to increase the quality and at the same time improve the efficiency of Supply Chain Management.
