An experiment was conducted in Kamal Shahr, Iran, during 2004 and 2005 to study the compatibility or incompatibility of P. avium cultivars Zarde Daneshkadeh, Protiva, Sorati Lavasan, Haj-Yosef and Meshkin Shahr with cv. Red Rezaeieh as the mother parent. To determine the compatibility or incompatibility of various pollens on Red Rezaeieh, controlled pollination was conducted and pollen tube growth was observed under a fluorescence microscope. The results of the controlled pollination method showed that Meshkin Shahr and Protiva were compatible, whereas Zarde Daneshkadeh, Sorati Lavasan and Haj-Yosefy were incompatible. The mean fruit set in Red Rezaeieh pollinized by Zarde Daneshkadeh, Protiva, Sorati Lavasan, Haj-Yosefy and Meshkin Shahr was 0.54, 40.49, 0.24, 0.80 and 61.36%, respectively. The pollen tube of Meshkin Shahr reached the ovary at 96 h after pollination, confirming the results of the controlled pollination study. Protiva and Meshkin Shahr were selected as the best pollinizers.
