A survey on the current status of soilless cultivation in Turkey.

The development of soilless culture in Turkey was studied in 2007. Data were obtained through interviews. The soilless culture started during 1995 in Antalya, which is the centre of protected cultivation. However, enterprises started to prefer geothermal areas for the establishment of soilless greenhouses in the last years. Therefore, the Aegean region that has abundant geothermal sources has become attractive for soilless cultivation. The total area of soilless greenhouse cultivation has reached 185 ha and geothermal energy has been used for heating in 37% of this acreage. Vegetables are grown in 92% of the area. Tomato is the most prominent, followed by blocky type pepper (Capsicum sp.).
