The effects of nutrient solution concentration and pot type on sub-irrigated tomato (cv. Durinta) yield, evapotranspiration and water use efficiency were studied under greenhouse conditions during 2004 and 2005. Two nutrient solution concentrations (full and half) and two pot types (Strophor and AutoPot) were evaluated. The nutrient solution consisted of 210 mg N, 40 mg P, 250 mg K, 150 mg Ca, 50 mg Mg, 2 mg Fe, 0.75 mg Mn, 0.4 mg B, 0.5 mg Zn, 0.1 mg Cu and 0.05 mg Mo/litre. The effects of nutrient concentration and pot type on total and marketable yields were significant in both seasons. AutoPot resulted in higher total and marketable yields in the autumn, while Strophor pots gave higher yields than AutoPot during the spring. The yield obtained with the half-strength nutrient solution (14.1 kg m-2) was higher than that obtained with the full-strength nutrient solution (13.8 kg m-2). The half-strength nutrient solution recorded higher total yield (14%), marketable yield (13%) and average fruit weight (14%) than the full-strength nutrient solution. Greater water use efficiencies were observed in the autumn (43.4-57.3 kg m-3) than n the spring (28.1-31.8 g m-3) due to lower levels of evapotranspiration in the autumn.
