The first part of this article - Challenges and Solutions by Patrick T. Moseley can be found in the September issue of The Battery Man. Both articles were presented at the BCI 117th Convention in New Orleans in April 2005. As part of its current program, The Advanced Lead Acid Battery Consortium has two projects partly sponsored under the UK Foresight Vehicle Program designed to demonstrate that properly designed and managed VRLA batteries can meet the power requirements demanded by the expanding market for fuel efficient, and thus low emission, vehicles. These two projects have been designated RHOLAB (Reliable, Highly Optimized Lead-Acid Battery) and ISOLAB (Installation and Safety Optimized Lead-Acid Battery). The RHOLAB Project has concentrated on the higher voltage battery while ISOLAB is looking to develop the technology for the lower voltages likely to be required by the mild hybrid vehicles.
