Growth and Nutrient Contents of Hot Pepper Plug Seedlings as Influenced by Pre-Planting Fertilizer Levels and Leaching Fractions

The growth and nutrient contents of hot pepper (Capsicum annuum L. 'Knockgwang') plug seedlings as influenced by pre-planting fertilizer levels (PFL) and leaching fractions (LF) in coir+peatmoss+perlite (4:4:2, v/v/v) were investigated at 35 and 75 days after sowing. Elevated PFL in each LF increased crop growth at 35 days after sowing. The dry weight of above ground tissue in 0.5X treatment of LF 0 and 0.9 were 58.8 and 76.6 mg, respectively, but those of 2.0X were 80.9 and 99.5 mg, respectively. The elevation of LF also increased dry weight. In evaluation of seedling quality by the equation of [dry weight (mg)/plant height (cm), DW/PH], the treatments of LF 0, 0.3 and 0.6 in PFL l.OX had 10.55,11.36 and 11.42, respectively, indicating that LF 0.6is good for seedling growth. The DW/PH of 2.0X treatment in LF 0.9 was 12.22, which was the highest value in all treatments tested. Elevated PFL in each LF and elevated LF up to 0.9 in each PFL also increased crop growth at 70 days after sowing. The elevated PFL in each LF resulted in the decrease of tissue N, P, K, Ca and Mg content, but the elevation of LF in each PFL resulted in the decrease of tissue N, Ca and Mg content. The 2.0X treatment in each LF had the lowest tissue P content at 70 days aftersowing. Comparing PFL, 0.5X treatment of LF 0 and 2.0x treatment of LF 0.3, 0.6 and 0.9 had comparatively higher tissue P content among treatments in each LF. Elevation of PFL increased tissue Ca and Mg content and decreased K content at 70 days after sowing.
