In order to evaluate seed glucosinolate contents and profiles, a total of 857 Japanese rapeseed (Brassica napus) germplasm accessions were analysed by HPLC. Low glucosinolate genotypes such as cv. 'Bronowski' were not found amongst the accessions tested. However, large variation was found for total glucosinolate content and also profiles. In particular, eight rapeseed accessions showed low progoitrin contents in aliphatic glucosinolate. Furthermore, one cultivar showed the lowest content of 4-hydroxyglucobrassicin. These cultivars might be useful for the development of rapeseed by reducing specific glucosinolates..
