ANODE BACKFILL IN CATHODIC PROTECTION

摘要

In cathodic protection of underground pipelines / structures, anodes are installed with backfill to promote better anode current efficiency. In this paper, a critical review on anode backfills over a period of 60 years has been carried out. The effect of specific ions in backfills and the effect of drying of backfills are emphasized. Different backfill systems especially the backfills for magnesium anodes, deep ground anode beds, reinforced concrete structures and gel-based backfills are dealt with. This paper encourages the researchers to peep into the probable areas of development for a new backfill system, which would provide a better performance at reasonable cost.
