The rapid development of accessible computingpower in the 1980s has led to the use of machine intelligence inevery sphere of engineering. The incredible progress in computingpower and availability has also created a tremendous wealth ofinformation available at the touch of a few buttons. However, suchwealth can easily provoke what is commonly described as'information overload.' The massive number of connectionsproduced by a single search of the web, for example, can greatlyoverwhelm users of this new technology. The rapidity of websearches is due to the synergy between progress made in networkconnectivity protocols, intelligent search strategies and supportinghardware. This paper will attempt to define the basic elements ofmachine intelligence in the context of corrosion engineering andexamine what has been done or could be done to introduceartificial thinking into daily operations. This paper will also reviewsome modern software systems commonly used for informationprocessing and internet searches.
