Ferrous miner works on two mainstream energy efficiency initiatives

South African ferrous miner, Kumba Iron Ore, is working on two mainstream energy efficiency initiatives, based on the company's two energy sources, diesel and electricity, Kumba principal electrical engineer Christo Oliver tells Mining Weekly. Diesel accounts for 88 percent of its energy costs, while electricity accounts for 12 percent of the company's total energy costs. Further, the company is investigating alternative energy sources such as solar power, as well as other renewable energies, as future power sources. Kumba is currently conducting a study to model the company's fuel consumption to identify areas where diesel efficiency can be improved.
