DTE’s coal costs questioned by Michigan AG

Michigan Attorney General Bill Schuette is asking stateregulators to disallow more than $15 million in DTE Energy’s forecasted coalcosts for this year, saying the utility could save money for its 2 millioncustomers by purchasing more low-sulfur Powder River Basin coal.In a filing this week with the Michigan Public Service Commission,the attorney general said DTE is expected to spend $727 million for thepurchase of 17.4 million st of thermal coal in 2016. Of that total amount,DTE has bought 1.2 million st of mid-sulfur and high-sulfur Easterncoal, with the remainder coming from the PRB.
