Massey files shelf registration for shares sale

Massey Energy plans to issue up to 8.5 million shares of common stock to help pay for its purchase of Cumberland Resources, according to a shelf registration filed after market close Monday with the Securities and Exchange Commission. The Richmond, Virginia, company said it intended to use the proceeds of its stock sale to fund a portion of the cash consideration for its $960 million acquisition of Cumberland Resources and certain affiliated companies (PCT 3/17).
