An innovative method for classification between adducts and van der Waals Complexes has been proposed by investigating various boron halides BX3 (X = F, Cl, and Br)-Lewis bases donor-acceptor complexes via utilization of noncovalent interaction descriptor. Interestingly, their interacting nature has also provided a basis for explaining different acid strength order of BF3, BCl3 and BBr3, which brings a new possible order of Lewis acid strength (BCl3 >BBr3 >BF3) with respect to some bases.
