Filled or empty? The layered crystal structure of Sr_2Ni _3 (see graphic) is closely related to that of Sr_2N. According to a chemical-bonding analysis, the intermetallic compound may be described as a strontium subnickelide with the heteropolar formulation [Sr _2]~(2+)[Ni_3]~(2-).
