The chemical industry has a long tradition of innovation - be it new products or processes - though this is not so well recognised. Many of the comforts of modern living are made possible by the industry, be it the clothes we wear, the food we eat, the houses we live in, the gadgets we use and the medicines we take. The ICIS innovation awards announced recently highlight some of the stellar achievements by the industry. What is significant is the fact that many of them are from the bulk and commodity petrochemicals businesses - lending credence to the adage that no technology is ever mature.
