Prof. Ian D Rattee OBE, co-inventor of 'Procion' Reactive Dyes

Sir William Henry Perkin, the father of synthetic dyes and the founder of the British chemical industry discovered the first man-made organic dye in 1856. At the Perkin Centenary in 1956, Imperial Chemical Industries (ICI) launched Procion Reactive Dyes invented by Ian D. Rattee in conjunction with Dr. W.E. Stephen and in 1960 each were awarded the Gold Medal of the Society of Dyers & Coloursists (SDC) for the development of a practical system of colouring cellulosic fibres, followed by the 'Henry E. Millson Award' from the Association of Textile Chemists & Co-lorists (AATCC) in 2000.
