DMT—The Unknown Story! Celebrating the Birth Centenary of the Doyen of Indian Chemical industry in April 2014

When his mother Jashoda passed away in 1917, he was only three years old. Luckily, two elder sisters were also there to raise him and other siblings. They were totally five brothers and four sisters, of which he was seventh borne. Bis father, Manilal, was a postmaster in Vadodara State, while the children lived in a small town called Petlad in Gujarat. The dying mother told her husband to ensure that at least one of her sons should become a graduate! As luck and very hard work would have it, their first son became a collector in North Gujarat; second became manager and then director in a textile mill; third became a businessman; and his younger brother retired as Chief Executive of a large shipping company. He himself helped pioneer major polymer industries in India. Having received his B.Sc. from MS University, he came to Bombay to join the second batch of UDCT! Too poor to study MBBS, he settled to receive his B.Sc. (Tech.) and then M.Sc. (Tech.) in textiles in 1939. The German Professor, who examined his Master's Thesis, wrote glowingly saying this work would deserve a Ph.D. in Germany!
