Important role for biotechnology in building a sustainable chemical industry

Biotechnology has been assessed a key technology for a sustainable chemical industry. Biochemical pro- cesses are expected to provide crucial building blocks of the future production systems. This technology has already been put to extensive use especially in the manufacture of biopharmaceuti-cals. Biotechnology is a source of great promise for innovations ranging from improving the diagnosis and treatment of hereditary diseases, to safer drugs, to more environmentally friendly herbicides and pesticides, to microbial processes to clean up the environment.
