New drug discovery efforts stymied by tenuous pharma industry-academia-government relationships

An indigenously discovered and developed new drug molecule has been the holy grail of the Indian pharmaceuticals industry. Even though a number of domestic firms have been claiming for past many years to have some exciting developments in the pipeline, it is now becoming more of a pipedream as years roll on. So what ails new drug discovery efforts in the country? A combination of many different factors at play involving the three major participants in the game - the industry, academic institutions and the Government.
