The overall agricultural scenario in India is not encouraging. The Indian Government will have to come to terms with large scale imports of grain and vegetable oil. The country will have to abolish import duties and undertake large scale imports to alleviate the hardship of poorer consumers. The plea to declare oil palm as a plantation crop has fallen on deaf ears for far too long. Progress on acceptance of genetically modified (GM) seeds is also non-existent.
