Evonik to reopen specialty polyesters plant in Alabama

The US subsidiary of Evonik Industries says it will reopen a specialty polyesters production plant at Mobile, AL, by 2018. The plant was mothballed in 2010 because of market reasons and the economic downturn at the time. The unit is designed to produce "several thousand metric tons" annually of polyester polyols, Evonik says. Specialty polyesters are used in reactive hot-melt adhesives and in the precoated metal market as a binder for paints, coil coatings, and, increasingly, in food-can coatings. Demand is driven by the trend toward bis-phenol A-free can-coating resins.
