BASF to Shut Expandable EPS Plants in India and Malaysia

BASF says it will shut down its Styropor expandable polystyrene (EPS) plants at Pasir Gudang, Malaysia; and Thane, India, due to overcapacity and poor margins. Production will be stopped by the end of the year. The plants have combined EPS production capacity of more than 100,000 m.t./year. There are 60 and 55 employees at Pasir Gudang and Thane, respectively. "The closure of BASF's Styropor plants in Malaysia and India has become inevitable due to the high EPS overcapacities in Asia/ Pacific that have developed in recent years. These overcapacities have led to extremely low margins, which make our operations in India and Malaysia uneconomic," says Giorgio Greening, head of the foams global business unit at BASF.
