摘要

In 1931, Winston Churchill wrote 'Fifty Years Hence', a popular article about the prospective impact of science on society for The Strand Magazine.1 In it, he predicted that advances in nuclear physics would lead to weapons of unimaginable power. 'Nuclear energy is incomparably greater than the molecular energy which we use today … There is no question among scientists that this gigantic source of energy exists'. Churchill forecast that advances in nuclear physics and quantum mechanics would fundamentally change both civilian technology as well as military weaponry: it would lead to new types of extremely powerful weapons in the military sphere and a potentially unlimited supply of power in the civil sphere.
