BASF Introduces Novel Acrylate Monomer

BASF has begun producing hydroxy-propyl carbamate acrylate (HPCA), a crosslinking acrylate monomer used in coatings, based on a proprietary one step enzymatic fermentation process. The HPCA is generated by the enzymatic transesteri-ncation of hydroxypropyl carbamate and ethyl acrylate. HPCA can be used in clearcoat systems for the automotive industry. One coat with HPCA creates a product with the performance of two conventional coatings, the company says. Other applications include adhesives. BASF expects the market to be global.
