DSM and Roquette Build Commercial-Scale, Bio-Based Succinic Acid Plant

DSM, and starch and starch derivatives company Roquette Freres (Lestrem, France), have announced plans to build a commercial-scale plant to produce bio-based succinic acid, the first non-fossil feedstock-derived chemical building block. The plant will be designed to produce 10,000 m.t./year and be Europe's largest bio-based succinic acid facility. It will be built at Roquette's Cassano Spinola, Italy site and be onstream in the second half of 2012. Investment details were not disclosed. DSM and Roquette have been developing the technology jointly since 2008 and they operate a demonstration plant at Lestrem. The companies have also announced their intention to establish a joint venture, Reverdia, to run this business, subject to regulatory approvals.
