Recent concerns over possible negative environmental impacts from coal fired IPP plants planned for construction in the first decade of the present millennium raise hope among the public that renewable energy can play more significant role in electricity generation, even replacing fossil-based power stations altogether in the near future. In the first decade of the 2000 millennium domestic hydroelectric stations will be the major source of renewables in electricity generation, augmented by biomass-based cogeneration SPPs. Their total energy contribution is 5-10%. Few tens of PV may be installed but their electricity generation within the national framework would remain small. In the second decade, one could see more contribution from hydroelectrics in neighbouring countries and from biomass if related logistics can be improved. Installation of tens or ever hundreds of MWP of PV and of windelectric systems could be feasible and possible. The total renewable contribution to electricity generation can be closed to 10% in the second decade.
