Allergic contact dermatitis caused by self-adhesive electrocardiography electrodes: A rare case with concomitant roles of nickel and acrylates

A 28-year-old Turkish female with dilated cardiomy-opathy presented with itchy eczematous plaques on contact sites of self-adhesive electrocardiography (ECG) electrodes (Fig. 1a). This was the first problem following three episodes of prolonged skin contact (24-72 hr) with Holter electrodes during the previous 4 months. The lesions resolved with topical corticosteroids within 10 days. Patch testing was performed with our extended European baseline series, a cosmetic series, a rubber series, and an acrylate series (Brial Allergen, Greven, Germany; or Chemotechnique? Diagnostics, Vellinge, Sweden), by the use of 10 Chambers? (Chemotechnique? Diagnostics), and with individual parts of ECG electrodes of four different brands, by the use of Hypafix? tape. Tests were removed after D2, and test sites were marked with the Chemotechnique? skin marker (Chemotechnique? Diagnostics), and evaluated according to International Contact Dermatitis Research Group criteria at D2, D3, D4, and D7.
