Metformin Use Associated With Poor Cognitive Performance

Of the 1354 subjects, participants with diabetes were found to have worse cognitive performance than participants without the disease (OR 1.51 95% CI .03-2.21). Those using metformin showed the worst scores among participants with diabetes. Use of calcium and vitamin B12 supplements among participants with diabetes showed greater cognitive performance than those not taking supplements."Any effect metformin has on cognitive performance may be at least partially mediated by altering serum vitamin B12 levels," researchers wrote, cautioning that "safety of calcium supplementation in patients with diabetes treated with metformin would need to be established before such interventions could be recommended."
