A 2-GHz band multi-port power combining feed-forward amplifier for adaptive array systems

A new power amplifier configuration is proposed that yields a Multi-Port Amplifier (MPA) with improved isolation for adaptive array systems. The configuration combines N main amplifiers into a conventional N-in/N-out MPA with feed-forward arrangement. The MPA's distortion cancellation circuit can simultaneously eliminate the intermodulation distortions created by the N main amplifiers and the leakage power from the other ports into the desired port. When using the MPA in an adaptive array base stations, the leakage power causes MPA phase error which impacts main beam. Leakage power suppression is indispensable for multi-port power amplifiers. A 2-GHz band 4-in/4-out multi-port power combining feedforward amplifier is developed. The developed amplifier achieves 50dB isolation, 0.1dB and 0.1deg gain and phase deviations up to the output power of 35dBm. This paper shows the feasibility of the proposed power amplifier for adaptive array base station.
